The elevator pitch

From the Monfort College of Business at UNC, Greeley: "Imagine you are on an elevator and find yourself standing next to an executive of your dream company. What would you say? Could you clearly convey your passion, describe your career goals, articulate your skills, and entice a listener to learn more in a short elevator ride?"  Answer the questions "tell me about yourself" and "why should I hire you" as you craft your elevator pitch.

What is an Elevator Pitch?

An elevator pitch is when you take 30-90 seconds to tell whomever you are speaking with who you are, what makes you unique, and the benefits and value you can provide to them. You start with a hook to intrigue your listener and finish with a request for action.

Why is an Elevator Pitch so important?

This could be your first impression and the first thing that people ever hear or read about you. It is a very effective way to get your foot in the door for various opportunities, such as internships and job offers, and expand your professional network of colleagues and contacts.

When do I use my Elevator Pitch?

  • Conversations with coworkers
  • Introductions to potential employers
  • Opportunities within your own company (promotions)
  • Networking events
  • Casual networking
  • Career or job fairs
  • Cover letters
  • Email introductions
  • Mentor requests
  • Job Interviews
  • Anytime!
